Abstract South Asia has a long historical heritage of informal and semi-formal responses by communities and individuals to disablement from antiquity to the present. Documented histories of the Indian subcontinent provide evidence that disabled people played various roles in their families and communities, sometimes with a good deal of independence.

Top-down, charitable or restrictive responses have been the most common, whether in folklore, epic or religious literature, with basic community provision of food and shelter to disabled people among many other categories of needy people. Within families, the tasks of care normally fell on female members.

This article has been cited by other articles in PMC. Abstract Most of the psychiatry practice in India is guided by the western concepts of mental health and illness, which have largely ignored the role of religion, family, eastern philosophy, and medicine in understanding and managing the psychiatric disorders. India comprises of diverse cultures, languages, ethnicities, and religious affiliations. However, besides these diversities, there are certain commonalities, which include Hinduism as a religion which is spread across the country, the traditional family system, ancient Indian system of medicine and emphasis on use of traditional methods like Yoga and Meditation for controlling mind.

This article discusses as to how mind and mental health are understood from the point of view of Hinduism, Indian traditions and Indian systems of medicine. Further, the article focuses on as to how these Indian concepts can be incorporated in the practice of contemporary psychiatry. These concepts of psychiatry which have dominated the field in the last century or so have mostly been developed for individuals with an internal locus of control as in the west and have largely ignored the role of religion, family, eastern philosophy and medicine in understanding and managing the psychiatric disorders.

It has also been increasingly recognized that there is a significant difference between the east and the west in the distribution, phenomenology, treatment seeking behavior, and prognosis of people with mental illness. Hence, now there is an increasing focus on the role of Eastern concepts in understanding and managing psychiatric disorders. In recent times, there has been a greater emphasis on person-centered approach,[ 1 ] which emphasizes that treatment and care should be provided by health services by placing the sick person and their caregivers at the center of care.

Practice of person-centered approach requires that the treating physician must have better understanding of the patient’s socioeconomic, ethnic, cultural, religious, and spiritual beliefs, etc. India has a vast population comprising of diverse cultures, languages, ethnicities, and religious affiliations.

One hotel’s idea of ecotourism is another’s ploy to cash in on conscience. Some eco-sensitive retreats ask guests to reuse towels and insist they’ve saved the world. Others can’t seem to do enough to serve the three-tiered mission of responsible tourism: The great joy of treading lightly, even as I shoo scorpions in Belize, clink across glaciers in Canada, and brave puddle jumpers through the Australian outback, comes from eschewing the conveniences we usually take for granted only to discover how rich life can be without them.

This cultural variety makes South Asia a fascinating topic of study but it also means that the generalizations intrinsic to a synthesis of its history are more challengeable than those made about many other areas of the world. Over the past two millennia Aryan customs have gradually moved across the Deccan plateau into south India, but their influence remains uneven. Furthermore, these broad categories represent only the most obvious differences and ignore many cultural patterns that frequently were and are more meaningful in the lives of individual South Asian men and women.

Thus northwestern India has close cultural ties to Western Asia, whereas northeastern India reflects social arrangements found in Southeast Asia, even though both northwestern and northeastern India are encompassed in the Indo-European language sphere and have populations in which Muslims are a majority. Finally, none of these geographical and cultural categories indicate the intricate mosaic of tribal societies that tare concentrated primarily in northeastern and central India but exist throughout the South Asian subcontinent from the Himalayas to the Malabar coast.

These tribal societies have resisted integration into either the Aryan or Dravidian social frameworks until the twentieth century. Consequently, many scholars debate the validity of using the term Indian to describe such a multiplicity of cultures and regions. Nowhere is the problem of making generalizations more hazardous than in a survey of the history of women.

The initial western stereotype of Indian women tended to focus on exotic practices of physical seclusion or purdah and the ritual suicide of widows or sati.

Almsbowl as used by bhikkhus for going on almsround. Three monks seeking alms in Lhasa , Tibet. In Buddhism, alms or almsgiving is the respect given by a lay Buddhist to a Buddhist monk , nun , spiritually-developed person or other sentient being. It is not charity as presumed by Western interpreters. It is closer to a symbolic connection to the spiritual realm and to show humbleness and respect in the presence of the secular society.

As the Buddha has stated: Money cannot be accepted by a Theravadan Buddhist monk or nun in lieu of or in addition to food, as the Patimokkha training rules make it an offence worth forfeiture and confession. In China, Korea and Japan, local cultures resisted the idea of giving food to ‘begging’ clerics, and there was no tradition of gaining ‘merit’ by donating to practitioners.
