Dec24 My final bus driving duty of involved a road cone, a Bristol Lodekka and a witch. My conductor and I brought ex-Bath Services Bristol LG6G EHW down to Bridgwater College on the last day of term when traditionally the sixth form college students and staff dress up and do all sorts of wacky stuff in the name of charity. We had been given a route to follow, which was very similar to the one taken by the famous Bridgwater Carnival procession. As soon as I had parked the bus in one of the departure bays at the college we knew we were in the right place as almost every person that passed by was wearing a fancy dress costume of some sort. Pirates, road cones, bananas, clowns… and of course the aforementioned witch. The lady in question pictured above actually organised the bus tours we were about to provide and her costume was, as you can see, a work of art. She had planned for us to take groups of students and staff on a minute circuit of Bridgwater town centre.

Cardiff City discovered as much over an oddly flat 90 minutes that saw Burton Albion knock the Championship league leaders out of the Carabao Cup. There was fight late on, and a late goal from the lesser-spotted Anthony Pilkington, but Burton goals from Tom Naylor and Ben Fox ensured a win for Nigel Clough’s side. It wasn’t demoralising by any stretch of the imagination, but it perhaps highlighted that Cardiff still have work to do.
Huw Evans Picture Agency On the back of that brilliant win at Wolves, it was a seemingly golden chance to extend their winning run to six games.

An index of the several hundred vintage vehicle photographs featured on the site. Master index of the vintage motoring gallery. The vintage transport photos in this section of the site are now spread over 18 pages. In an attempt to make some kind of sense of them all, I’ve listed them on this one page, in alphabetical order.
Some pages feature several different photographs of a vehicle type, whereas in other instances, a variety of photos showing one particular type of car might appear in more than one page. Hopefully this new index of vintage vehicle photos will help visitors to the site find pics of the cars, lorries, coaches or vans that most interest them. A Vindication of Natural Society A Vindication of Natural Society First published at the New English Review We are not merely natural but we are natural in the sense that our lives are held together by emotional relationships rather than ideologies and the numinous things in life like art and religion and a need for countryside as well as beautiful landscapes. We are natural in the sense that we form emotional relationships, families and communities and need our countryside as solace or relief.
A varied and open countryside is beneficial to the physical and mental health of the population. We have a duty to pass on the environment we have inherited to our children, as they, in turn, will have a duty to pass it on to their children. The essence of Conservatism and Conservation is to conserve which derives from the Latin conservo, conservare, conservavi, conservatum.
They are closely related and from the same root. The English Conserve derives from that and this opens up the idea that to a Conservative Conserving the environment should be part of the practice not the Liberal pursuit of continuous economic growth. There is a growing sense of unease, a sense of dread that we have taken the wrong direction, that things are not eternally progressing but coming apart.
To the popular prejudice conservatism stands for one-sided market forces, aggressive commerce and self-interested individualism.
Cardiff City 1-2 Burton Albion: Bluebirds’ winning streak ends with Carabao Cup defeat
Jose Mourinho has taken a man squad to Ashton Gate, where Henrikh Mkhitaryan could make his first United start since November 5 after being dropped from eight of the last nine squads. However, Mourinho has also rested a number of first-teamers for the last eight tie ahead of United’s Saturday night Premier League fixture at Leicester. David de Gea, who did not start in the previous rounds against Burton Albion and Swansea, has earned a breather and Sergio Romero is set to start in his place.
The 8 and the 12, the latter taking a circuitous route via Daubhill, Little Hulton, Walkden, Roe Green and Worsley taking a scheduled 55minutes against the rather tightly timed 38 minutes of the more direct 8. Quite apart from the fascinating stuff we saw and rode on the way up, across and back down again, the Stockport and Manchester Crossleys made a great impression, and so did the great variety of operators working into Manchester, but I remember being especially taken by those lovely Salford Daimlers with their straight staircases, destination-winder trunnions and the no-nonsense, upright Metro-Cammell bodies.
To have lasted so long with such rough treatment these wonderfully characterful vehicles must have been as solidly-built as they looked—or were the fitters kept busy? I bet someone knows! I read that Salford always put their newest buses on the 15, which ran to Piccadilly, to impress their neighbours “across the river”. This has now been superseded by Shudehill Bus Station, which is actually in Manchester, and the whole area around Victoria Bridge Street is being redeveloped.
And yes, I agree about “Arndale”! On the radiator subject I only ever remember the radiator was far forward and was informed at the time it was because of the longer engine.

The former Middlesbrough boss will now be aiming to take the club to new heights next season. The Spanish coach has already completed a few deals for the club, bolstering the squad with new players before the start of the campaign. Aitor Karanka is not yet done with this shopping in the market and is apparently interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback on a permanent deal. Jack Colback The club are reportedly negotiating terms for the player after he enjoyed a successful loan stint with Forest last season.
Colback was signed by Karanka in January and spent just the second half of the season with the club before returning to Tyneside. He made a total of 16 appearances for the Reds, scoring just one goal during that time in a defeat against Bolton Wanderers on the final day. Colback has tons of experience when it comes to playing in England.
The midfielder came through the youth ranks of Sunderland before being promoted to the senior squad.

David “Salt” Walther , the former auto and hydroplane racer severely burned in a spectacular crash in the Indianapolis , has died. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death Friday, saying Walther was reported dead Thursday night and that the cause of death hadn’t been determined. At the start of the Indy , Walther’s car pinwheeled down the track, his legs sticking out of his torn-up racer, after touching wheels with Jerry Grant and slamming into the catch-fencing in a fiery crash near the starting line.
Blinded by the fireball that spread across the front straightaway, several other drivers slammed into Walther’s car.
